Minot/Burlington Flood 2011 : It has been a trying time, an extensive, trying time. We all fought the Mouse River, and the Mouse won, for now. The river crested in Minot at 1561.72 June 25/June 26, 2011. I have taken several pictures from June 22, 2011 through June 28, 2011. Excluding a couple of days when we just had to get out of town. Some days we could not get a lot of pictures as roads were blocked as were alleyway's. Sadly, the Mouse is predicted to maintain it's height (above 1559) for a week or more. Flood stage level at the Broadway Bridge in Minot is 1549. Clean up efforts will be just another chapter, perhaps one of the saddest. When people can finally go into their homes, or what is left of them, and assess the situation. We will hold our heads up and move on because we have a very good community, good neighbors and friends, and great neighboring towns that will not allow the Mouse to be the victor! I would personally like to thank the Citizens of Williston for all their drives and donations! I would also like to thank anybody and everybody for all their efforts during this time. My heart goes out to all those towns down stream from Minot, Logan, Sawyer, Velva.

Daylight The Steam Engine : October 15, 2009. Minot, ND was blessed with the a visit from the "Daylight", the only operable streamlined steam locomotive. The weather was not too shabby, cloudy and rainy, perfect for taking pictures. "Southern Pacific 4449 - Built in 1941 by Lima Locomotive Works as a 4-8-4 GS-4 Northern type locomotive, she is 110' long, 10' wide and 16' tall. With locomotive tender weighing 443 tons and a boiler pressure of 300 psi, her eight 80" diameter drivers and unique firebox truck booster can apply over 5000 horsepower to the rails and exceed 100 mph. Retired to Oaks Park in 1958 for display only, in 1974 she was completely restored speciffically to pull the 1976 Bicentennial Freedom Train throughout the US to the delight of over 30 million people. The only remaining operable Streamlined steam locomotive of the Art Deco era, this grand Lady of the High Iron pulled Southern Pacific Daylight coaches from Los Angeles to San Fransico over the scenic Coast Route and then on to Portland until 1955. She is arguablly one of the most beautiful locomotives ever built - and kept that way by the all volunteer Friends of the SP 4449." Blizzard of Dec 08 and Jan 09 : The first snow fell November 7th, 2008, dumping about 9 inches. By the end of December, the snow total was about 33 inches. January 8th, 2009, an additional foot of snow blanketed the snow covered ground. We did get more snow, that wonderful white fluffy stuff! Just what we needed. I sure hope this year's snow fall will please the farmers. Our snow piles change on a daily basis due to all the wonderful wind we are getting.

Eunice and JJ's Big Adventure : Eunice and JJ's adventure into Mahlen/Vangen family history - July 31 and August 2, 2008. We had so much fun! A special THANK YOU to Paul and Kim Mahlen for their generous hospitality and to Aunt Aimee for her wonderful stories and wonderful memories she shared with us during our visit to Erskine, MN. A special THANK YOU to Connie Hanson and her daughters for opening up her home and hosting a delicious lunch for the Vangen group! Another special THANK YOU to Robby Njos for taking the time to take a few pictures for us while we busily shared stories, pictures and more at the West Fargo Library! I hope everyone we contacted enjoyed the time we spent together as much as Eunice and I! July 31st, we landed in Erskine, MN at 1:30ish pm and spent the day with Paul and Kim Mahlen and Aunt Aimee Ness. We shared stories, looked at many pictures, seen a few cemeteries, old homesteads, little towns in the area and ate at a wonderful eatery in Winger, MN. The food was very delicious! (Sorry for keeping everybody awake so late!) We also enjoyed meeting Judy Hoeft and visiting with her for the few minutes we were able to! But, I had problems with my cell phone and had to go to the cell phone store to get it repaired, and ended up with a new phone and we were late for lunch. We had a wonderful home made lunch of baked ham, beans, sloppy joes, yummy potato salad and delicious brownies! Thank you very much Connie for that fabulous lunch! After lunch, the group of Vangen cousins, went to the West Fargo library to share pictures and stories. Rawson North Dakota : Rawson North Dakota - a little town in McKenzie County, ND. Rawson was founded in 1913 and the Rawson city government was dissolved in 2002. We lived in Rawson from 1977 to 1989. Many memories of my childhood remain in Rawson. The water is still as good as I remembered it! In the following pictures, you will see us tearing down our old house in Rawson. Mother nature was already taking it's toll on the building, so we needed to do something about it. When we lived there, we built an addition on to the original house which was once the McCormick Hardware Store. While we camped in Rawson, we tore down the addition we built and finally found the original house. The sun scorched us and temperatures reached 85 degrees or better. It cooled off to about 50 degrees at night. We were there from June 20 to June 25 2008. I might have the dates incorrect on the pictures, but it is close enough.

Fairview Train Bridge : The Fairview Bridge is located about 3½ miles east of Fairview across the North Dakota boarder. The Missouri River and the Yellowstone River meet near this bridge. The train bridge is awesome, it has a lift that I believe was only used once. After a train crosses the train bridge, it goes into a tunnel that is 1,456 feet long! It is really neat! If you ever go to see it, be sure to bring a flashlight, that tunnel gets really dark.
